   ECC bus review    November 1, 2013

Use it or lose it?

Dedham/Langham Bus Services: 247: Colchester to Harwich l02 (Sunday), 103/104(pm)

Essex County Council has announced a 12-week review of its subsidised bus services – which includes those above.   They are consulting across the county to seek people’s views by way of a Questionnaire which is available for completion on-line at www.essex.gov.uk/busreview or via 0845 6037631 (office hours).  The particular emphasis of the review is on two discrete areas which are (1) out of hours services and (2) rural services.  School bus services are also under review.

Were we to lose the above services it would leave Dedham and Langham without any bus service at all which would mean no means of accessing the following by public transport:

Main line railway stations at Colchester Town, Colchester North;

Colchester, the Oaks and Essex County Hospitals;  Doctors and dentists and other ancilliary health service practices;  Colchester Town for shopping, banking or other business services and social recreation;  Schools and further/higher education establishments.

It would also impact on tourism to the Dedham Vale.

Withdrawal of these services would mean reliance on expensive taxis or friends and family.    It would also deprive many elderly and single people of not only transport but a vital social element in their lives which helps to keep them in touch with the community around them.

At this stage the Questionnaire is only seeking general views on residents priorities and there is no specific threat to individual services.   This will potentially come early in the new year when specific proposals are published for reductions in service provision.

It is therefore vital that we have our say via this Questionnaire which needs to be completed and returned to Essex by 9th December 2013.  For this reason the Parish Council has arranged for Questionnaires to be available at the Chemists in the High Street and on the 247 bus itself.     When completing the form please be sure to add your postcode in box 6 and tick the relevant boxes in 11.

One of our residents, Ann Follows (01206 323038) has volunteered to co-ordinate our campaign and also has copies and can provide further information (evenings and weekends).    Please help us save this service and help Ann by completing this Questionnaire.   The more people who use these services the better.

Cllr.Sheila Beeton,

Chair, DPC.
